WATAN Reaffirms Its Commitment to Displaced Communities Through Expanded WASH Services in Idlib

In November, WATAN formalized a new partnership with the Directorate of Social Affairs and Labor in Idlib, represented by Mr. Firas Kardous, through a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Mr. Ahmad Kayali on behalf of WATAN.The agreement paves the way for a coordinated rollout of critical Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services across a series of displacement camps in Idlib Governorate.

Immediately after the signing, WATAN teams began delivering essential services designed to reduce public-health risks and improve daily living conditions for displaced families. The intervention includes:

Supplying clean and safe drinking water to more than 22 camps, ensuring consistent access for thousands of people.

Emptying and rehabilitating sanitation pits, a vital measure to reduce contamination and protect families from waterborne diseases.

Conducting awareness sessions inside the tents, focusing on personal hygiene, safe water practices and preventive health behaviours.

These activities are carried out daily by specialized field teams who work directly inside the camps and maintain direct communication with residents to understand and address their most urgent needs.

Displacement Continues Despite Improved Stability

Although Syria has experienced relative stability over the past year, large-scale destruction, damaged infrastructure and the absence of reconstruction have prevented countless families from returning to their homes. As a result, thousands of people remain in makeshift camps, struggling to meet even the most basic needs, including clean water and safe sanitation.

WATAN continues to stand with displaced communities and works to ensure that families living in tents are not forgotten. This project is part of a wider effort to support people who have endured years of hardship and remain unable to return to their homes.

As an extension of this intervention, WATAN will distribute hygiene kits next month to the same camps, strengthening disease prevention and improving overall hygiene conditions.

This initiative reflects WATAN’s long-term commitment to improving the quality of life for displaced families and ensuring access to essential WASH services — a fundamental right and a critical step toward restoring dignity and stability for communities in Idlib.
