As part of its ongoing commitment to reconstruction and supporting the return of displaced persons, Watan has signed a new partnership agreement with the Polish Embassy in Damascus. The project aims to rehabilitate damaged homes in the city of Kafranbel in the southern Idlib countryside, paving the way for hundreds of displaced families to return home. This project builds on Watan’s recent successes in rehabilitating 400 homes in the cities of Maarat al-Numan and Idlib.
Agreement Signing and Objectives
The agreement was signed on August 12, with Watan represented by Engineer Ahmed Ghawi, Program Director, while the Polish Embassy was represented by Piotr Wiśniewski, Second Secretary.
Fully funded by the Polish Embassy, the project focuses on the shelter sector and includes the rehabilitation of 21 moderately damaged homes (G2 classification) in Kafranbel. The project aims to:
• Support the return of displaced families by providing safe and suitable housing.
• Reduce reliance on camps and temporary shelters.
• Create stable conditions that encourage the rebuilding of local communities.
Priority will be given to low-income families, female-headed households, families with elderly members (60+), people with disabilities, and households with five or more orphaned children under the age of ten.
Implementation and Expected Impact
Over a two-month period, the project will begin with home assessments and ownership verification, followed by detailed cost estimation and agreements with selected beneficiaries. Rehabilitation work will include repairs to doors, windows, bathrooms, kitchens, and living spaces, as well as special accommodations for people with disabilities and the elderly.
The project is expected to have a significant positive impact on the beneficiaries, improving their housing conditions and restoring dignity to families returning home. This will strengthen stability across the region and reduce reliance on temporary aid.
